It figures that just as I'm feeling particularly overscheduled I conclude it's time to make some decisions about any trips I want to take this summer. The Big B has, indeed, implemented a change to the vacation accural system so that I now get three weeks a year (rather than having to wait until my 5-year anniversary to start getting three weeks), and I'm doing the short version of the Kalamazoo vacation and thinking seriously about doing the short version of the Thanksgiving trip, all of which leaves me sufficient days to take an entire week somewhere in addition to the usual Christmas week-or-so.

I've been thinking of taking 4 vacation days during 4th of July week (to make up the rest of the week) and dithering about whether to use the week for a trip to Maine, or a road-trip up the Pacific coast to see all sorts of friends I haven't seen for too long, or maybe just go off and sit in the redwoods all by myself for a week. And now, checking some scheduling, I notice that the conlang (invented langauges) conference at U.C. Berkeley this summer falls on the weekend immediately after the 4th of July. Hmm. That eliminates the potential combination of a trip to Maine and the conlang conference. (On that week, at least.) Probably ditto for a road trip up the coast, although not necessarily. It doesn't eliminate the possibility of doing the conference and taking a week off to do whatever some other week (although without the benefit of the freebie holiday included).

And much as I'd really like to get in a second Maine trip for the year (besides the Christmas one), I already have three cross-or-nearly-cross country plane trips on the schedule for the year. And I've been whining for the last couple of years about wanting a vacation where I'm not doing anything in particular. And then there's the factor that if I don't get down to brass tacks and make a decision and get something on the calendar, I'll let the time slip away and never get anything planned at all. (Look how late my ski trip ended up getting left.)

Or maybe I should just take the couple of days after the 4th for a short off-sitting-in-the-redwoods and then have some spare days for seam allowance later? I think I shall have to dither for a while more.

something for the calendar- next may, the U of M is having a conference on medieval textiles. It will either be the week before or after k'zoo (my hope is before, and I'm on the org committee...and the director wants to come to my wedding. Good chance of May 2-4, 2008) The concentration will be on the evolution and use of color, or so Susan proposes.

Week after would be a problem, if things schedule the way they usually do for our kingdom collegium. Actually, I probably will be avoiding any extra scheduling of events around May next year -- have to save plenty of elbow room for my 50th birthday celebrations!
