Dear Mr. Driver of Large Trucks,

I fully appreciate that when informing clueless drivers that they have just made an illegal and dangerous lane change that the air horn is an extremely efficient tool. However if your ultimate goal is to improve the overall safety of the road, you might have a thought for the effect that air horn has on the bicyclist you are immediately behind.

No love,

HRJ

P.S., If overall road safety is your goal, try to avoid cutting the inside curve so close that the bicyclist has to go up on the sidewalk to avoid getting sideswiped when you're passing her.

(The freeway foo has ended up dumping a significant number of commuters onto my route home. They're all frustrated and cranky. My only satisfaction is zipping by them on the bike.)

Oh, you do have my sympathy. I ended up with a broken shouder and a smashed helmet caused by a nasty truck driver who thought that was some kind of count coup and I dodged too much and hit the sidewalk curb and went over -- hard!

No no no no. The recent exploding gasoline tanker on the freeway that took out two parts of a major interchange (in spitting distance from my house) has dumped a lot of freeway commuter traffic onto nearby streets. One of those streets is my route home. This same street also has a couple of in-progress condominium construction projects going on which have messed with the timing of nearby traffic signals. All this results in a large number of cars backed up for long distances, impatient to get where they're going, and being stupider than usual. You might think that I'd switch to driving for the nonce for safety reasons, but if I were driving then I'd be one of that large number of cars backed up for long distances.
