I debuted the peacock-blue fitted Gothic underdress this weekend. (Props to [livejournal.com profile] thread_walker who did the original draping.) It seems to have worked well, based on all the commentary I got. (Including the now-standard "people who have never had two words to say to me previously who are suddenly deeply opinionated about my physical appearance". Is it really so wrong for me to consider this a little creepy?) If life runs true to form, there will be no photos of the dress available to point at, but I'll be wearing it again for Collegium at the end of the month.

We can fix that. ;) Also, there are several pics of you on my website.

There are people who can give a compliment about one's clothes or hair or whatever such that it makes one smile. And then there are people who can give a compliment such that it makes one check for escape routes. Casualness and brevity help a lot with the former kind; "deeply opinionated" sounds like a recipe for the latter.

It isn't so much the specific content as the fact that these are people who I've been around, in some cases, for over a decade, and who apparently have never previously found anything to speak to me about. And it isn't as if I spend my life being nothing but a visual presence to those around me. I don't have a problem with people who have always been interested in my activities and ideas and accomplishments also being interested in what I've been doing with my body. I have a problem with people who seem to think the only interesting thing about me is my body.

Hopefully Not a Creep!

I know (hope!) this isn't directed at me specifically, but having recently been one who commented for the first time ever about your apperance... well, honestly it's because I didn't feel comfortable enough 'til now. I see you around more in social situations and in smaller groups, and felt more comfortable to voice the thought that traipsed across my brain. That's all. :)

Nope. Utterly true to form -- I don't even show up in any backgrounds.

Well you did look quite lovely! I suppose there is some anonymity to dressing nondescriptly... and it is true there are a few people who have a hard time keeping even the most banal opinion to themselves. tee hee

But I hardly live an anonymous life! (Nor do I have a history of dressing nondescriptly, for many definitions of that word.) My point is that if someone has never felt inspired to talk to me for my intelligence, my skills, my creativity, my ideas, my hard work, or anything else I've done in the last 30 years in the SCA, then when they are inspired to talk to me because I've dropped a few pounds and am wearing a tight-fitting dress, I have a hard time considering it much of a compliment.

The dress is bright blue and you stood out in it. It was like watching a painting. Huzzah to you! Aside from the "perfectly period feast" outfit, you haven't worn bright colors in a bit. Hence the comments I think. Also, the weight loss (again well done) is now a healthy look, so you looked good! Lastly, you appear to have been more social the last couple years - or at least maybe some of us are not quite to afraid of interacting with you.
-- my 2 cents --

I hope by "deeply opinionated" you mean "deeply appreciative" but are just being modest. Complimentary creepiness can be tolerated; uncomplimentary creepiness calls for swift and total ostracization (I told you I'm an intolerant bitch). Creepy is like porn--you know it when you see it. No need to defend your judgment.
